Here’s what we’d do
Choose one indoor anchor: the LBJ Library for history, the Jones Center for contemporary art, or BookPeople and its café for books and conversation. Keep any second stop optional. A rainy-day plan works best when the people agree on the activity before you start comparing restaurants.
How to make it happen
Go at your own pace.
- Pick the mood
History, art or books?
Send just these three choices. A preference for conversation points toward coffee and books; interest in an exhibition points toward a museum.
- Check the arrival
Work out the wet part of the trip
Confirm parking and the entrance route with the venue. Do not describe a plan as completely sheltered unless the whole arrival has been checked.
- Keep the ending open
Finish together, then make the extra stop optional
Choose a rough end time. Anyone who wants a meal afterward can decide after the main activity without making everyone spend more.

A few things to know
Museum tickets or individual café orders
A café outing lets each person choose their own order. A museum has a clearer admission cost to check beforehand. Neither option includes transport or parking in the activity price.
Is this your kind of plan?
An indoor destination doesn't make travel safe during severe weather. Reschedule if local conditions make the trip unsuitable.
- Check current hours and any special-event entry rules.
- Confirm arrival and parking separately from indoor access.
- Check current weather and travel conditions before setting off.
The fallback should preserve the outing
If tickets or seating don't work, switch to the backup everyone already accepted. Avoid turning the plan into a long drive between full venues. The backup is a choice to verify, not a held place.
For families with young children
Choose by the child’s interests and the adults’ expectations. Check the venue’s current family guidance and stroller rules; an indoor art museum is not automatically a hands-on children’s activity.
Keep a good idea
Good idea. Maybe later?
Save it for your people, or choose when to revisit it.

Good questions
What can we do in Austin when it rains?
Consider an indoor museum visit or BookPeople with its café. Choose the activity first, confirm the date and arrival route, and leave a second stop optional.
Which option is easiest for people with different budgets?
Books and coffee allow individual purchases. Tell the group upfront whether buying a drink is expected and make book purchases optional.
